I love picking. It's good to hear a fellow bassist be so proud of playing with a pick.
Right on, man.

There are some people that feel you aren't a real "bassist" because you don't use your fingers.

Do yourself a favor and ignore them - fingerstyle is a valuable skill, but not enough to validate you as a bassist.

The only pick tone I really enjoy and like using is the one I get out of my fingernails on flatwound strings. If I had a pick that did this for me, I'd use picks alot more often, but the sound of a regular pick to me is too harsh for my tastes, even in heavy rock music.

I have said this I am sure on another endless post about picking. many of the greatest bass players have used a pick.
Anthony Jackson, anyone, John Paul Jones, John Entwistle, Steve Swallow, great rock players like Ellefson, Mcartney, Sting. Where would AC/DC be without Cliff Williams downstrokes.

I personally used to double years ago as I was in a band that needed it. I now basically play fingerstyle exclusively.

But if that AC/DC tribute band came up or I was doing Yes covers, I mean is there any other way.

Well no. Its a different sound, thats why you pick and not pluck.

I only play with a pick, not only can you cut through better, play faster, but you also don't have to worry too much about getting carpal tunnel syndrome or tendonitis or whatever, same with not beating up your fingers so much. I like it so much I never even consider going back to fingerstyle.

jsbass, tsk tsk tsk...you ALWAYS have to worry about carpal tunnel or tendonitis no matter whether you use a pick or fingers. I almost got carpal tunnel from using a pick, as a matter of fact. Fortunately, I went to carolkaye.com and learned the proper technique for using a pick on bass, and I haven't have wrist pain since.
