what i don't understand is how he gets the popping noise playing regular fingerstyle? does anyone know?

must be in the bass, because if i attack it hard it flaps out and no popping noise whatsoever

It's a combination of technique, EQ and strings really. He plays quite hard, has a lot of "top end" in his EQ and his strings are quite bright.
