I just had a REVALATION:

Sign in to disble this ad
Even the greats, Wooten...Jaco, etc...

Had to practice the hard pieces they play extensively. Some parts they had to work out note by note.

I just lost the link to the video, but Wooten says he would spend hours on some of his solo pieces.

I seriously just thought they could do it out of the blue.

This is good, I was getting down and out trying to learn Norwegian Wood...(FORGET that tapping section at the end).

That's also true of bands. For example, Rush is going to be touring this year, and they'll be playing the album Moving Pictures in its entirety. Now a lot of those songs, such as Limelight and YYZ, they can probably play in their sleep, since they've played them so often in the past. But more obscure songs, such as The Camera Eye or Vital Signs, will have to be relearned.

I think as humans we can only remember so much. When I was younger I learned to play Led Zeppelin's The Song Remains The Same on guitar note-for-note, and I could nail it pretty much every time. Fast forward 30 years, and today I can't even remember what key it's in!

They also need to practice the "easy" ones extensively too, until they appear to be "easy".

Amateurs practice until they get it right.

Pros practice until they can't get it wrong.

Virtuoso jazz bassist Jimmy Haslip was in town last month, and we hung out for a few hours playing, teaching me all kinds of things... it was a beautiful, sunny, warm day- the Yellowjackets had played 2 sold out shows the night before and had 2 more sold out shows that evening. I asked Jimmy what he was going to do that sunny, warm afternoon... His reply: "Shed"

D, it's in D, and i would probably blow at TSRTS at the moment.

Yeah, lots of practice and repetition.

Thanks, it is in D. And I wouldn't "probably" blow, I'd most definitely blow at TSRTS!

Indeed. This is a misconception about improvisation. That you walk up on a stage like a blank slate, the muse hits you, and beautiful music just starts pouring out of the instrument. The fact is the great improvers work hard off stage at fundamentals, figuring out what works and what doesn't, and aquiring a improv tool set in a manner of speaking.

This is a major thing that people need to realize in order to get over discouragement. It's easy to think that the hand of god just reached down and made the greats play, but it's practice, hours and hours of it.

A spelling error, obviously.

And I'm seeing Rush in August for this Moving Pictures Tour!

The moment where you understand you need a dictionary.

Or should have used spelling control.
