I just learned "I want you back". Now what?

As of lately I feel like I have plateau'd and need to work on new stuff. I have been digging into some stuff I have never tried. I learned "I want you back" this week and now I am totally digging the motown bass stuff. I have been reading a lot and am feeling very inspired. Does anyone have any other suggestions that are "must know" songs to learn as a bass player? I have been working a lot on funk stuff and r&b. I just learned superstition, play that funky music, and brickhouse. A buddy of mine that is a great player suggested those. More ideas please!

Great song to get your fingers loose. I'm trying to talk my new band into covering it...

Don't stop there! Run all the J5 hits, awesome basslines.

"Mama's Pearl" "ABC" "Stop The Love You Save" "Who's Loving You" etc.

You should check out "Standing In the Shadows Of Motown" which you can get from amazon for about 20 bucks. It has two CD's of famous bass players playing Jamerson lines, and all the transcriptions written out. You can also dial out the bass and play along with the musical track. Truly a great learning tool, his bass parts range from easy to really difficult, and are always freakin cool! I have all my students get this book, no matter how good they think they are-it is the groove bible as far as I am concerned.

Check out the movie too. Bob Babbitt is a monster player too.

Great song, but I have to say that I found "I want you back" to be a more challenging piece. "I Wish" just seemed natural to me...

That's really funny----I've been learning that song (REALLY learning it) lately for my next video----Congrats man! That's a tough one.
Don't rely on "Songs that every bassist should know"
IF you find yourself listening to any song, just learn it!

For a great Jamerson one-two punch, check out God is Love and Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology) which are tracks 5 and 6 on Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" album.

Look how inspired this dude is playing God is Love, puts a smile on my face ;-)

You did notice the wiki article correctly identified Mercy Mercy Me as Bob Babbitt's and not Jamerson?

My Bad, thanks (well, still a great bass performance):

James Jamerson – bass guitar "What's Going On," "What's Happening Brother," "Flyin' High," "Save the Children," "God Is Love," and the b-side "Sad Tomorrows"

Bob Babbitt – bass guitar "Mercy, Mercy Me," "Right On," "Wholly Holy," and "Inner City Blues"
