I know about 1-2-4 but does anyone use 1-2-3?

I know I've read from books and learned from several people around here that the most commonly used left hand technique is 1-2-4 or index, middle, pinky but due to an accident at work I've suffered nerve damage in my pinky and cannot put excessive pressure on it before it will literally lock up and cramp like noone's business. I can use it from time to time to actually fret once in a while but full time fretting is out of the question.

So in turn I've learned to strech and strengthen my ring finger and It has become a welcome substitute to my pinky. However I have had several people ask me about my fretting when they see me play, Is playing with your ring finger for a fretting finger really that unusual?

i use both depending on the line. I think "limiting" your self to either or is the wrong technique(unless you have a situation like your self)

because really, if i stuck to one or the other my lines would be really hard to play. generally if i just gotta move a whole step i use my pinky, but in other instances like playing a minor chord i would play the 5th with my ring, use my pinky for the minor 3rd and index on the root. a lot of my lines are chord tones, so i use this alot.

I use 1-2-4, but I'm a fan of the One-Finger-Per-Fret technique. When I decide to play octaves using that approach, 2-3-4 is much more comfortable for me than 1-2-3.

yeah, when the time comes I do use my pinky, It's like I it's useless but constant use can cause some bad pains.
