I suck at the bass. Seriously. When I first started out, I had a short scale Ibanez. When I graduated to a Fender P Bass, not long ago, I began to not have the "chops" I used to have. My playing slowed down. I couldn't hit the same fills with the same accuracy and precision. The stings (same gauge as on Ibanez) feel more tense. I can't play as fast. The set up is the same. Everything is the same. Why is this happening?

Sounds like your used to a short scale.

Try some out at the local guitar shop.

They ARE more tense. Think about it. You're taking a longer string scale, and tuning it to the same pitch. I bet if you tune down the strings by a whole step, the bass will start to feel more familiar.

Most people LIKE a somewhat stiffer string... you might just have to go a gauge down to get what you want.

if you have a horn section being told "you blow" is a compliment. Sucking however is not advisable on a brass instrument, you might get something gross in your mouth. Now, a vacuum cleaner ensemble on the other hand...

It only takes one harmonica player to change a light bulb... but he'll go through about 6 boxes before he finds one that works.

Might try a lower set-up, but, as suggested, you're coming from a short scale. Long way from a P bass. Dropping a gauge is a good thought, too. Don't worry, though, I suck on every scale from 25" to 34" and likely 35" as well! It'll take time to get yer "chops" on that big bat of a neck. You might try a Jazz-size neck on fer size one of these days. Practice is what it takes(except in my case where it will take surgery)(brain surgery).
