Umm, most if not all music has something to do with scales.

I find that starting with an octave jump:

G---5
D----
A3---
E----

helps, so Id play a simple riff something like this:

G---5-----3--5
D------5------
A3------------
E-------------

you gotta play it with a funky rhythm:

1/4, 1/8, 1/8, 1/4, 1/4

and put emphasis on the G5 at the end of the riff not the A3 at the start.

Then I just kind of play little embellishments off of that riff and walk it up and down the fret board.

mix up those 2 things. Thats how I set up a funky improve. I just use deferent riffs to walk and play around on but generally set them up with octave jumps.

Try that out for example.
