Index finger pain

Fretting(left)hand. Just my index finger, last digit joint. Pretty sure it comes from playing 'caved in' instead of arched. Been playing this way for a very long time, but it recently has become an issue.
I have figured out that I do it to mute strings, mostly while slapping.
For example to slap/pop a 4th, I will slap the E string, then pop the A. To get a clean sound I 'roll' the meaty part of my fingertip over to the A, while keeping the tip on the E in order to mute the E. So I'm sort of 'barring' the E and A strings, with only the A string ringing out.
This technique seems to be taking a toll on my finger joint. I need a different technique that will accomplish the same muting result. Haven't figured out how to do this with my right hand. Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated. Dave

Make an appointment to see an orthopedist or hand specialist. Do a search here on hand pain.

Arched provides support. Your description of how you're muting the string with your index finger sounds painful. Stop doing that and see if it gets better.

IMO you should take some time off and make sure the pain is gone before you get back to it. A week or two now might save you years. You could very well cause further and or serious injury otherwise.

Once you get the arched thing happening, remember to keep the muscles in your hand and forearms relaxed. Sit or stand up straight. Strength comes from your core, the big muscles in the back support your arms and everything down to your fingertips. Remember that as you deviate from the arched finger positioning. Also consider your muting options. Say, for example, using the palm under the thumb of your right hand, or the thumb of your left hand coming over the fingerboard, Richie Havens style. I'm sure you will find what works for you.

Disclaimer: i'm not an MD or anything of the sort. Just a bassist for 17 years. Anyway, my 2 cents.
