Ingrown fingernails

I've been having the problem of my ring fingernail getting sort of ingrown when I cut it.

My ring fingers are sort of squarer on the ends than my other fingers, which makes cutting my fingernails difficult. Either they have to be kind of long, or I cut them fully and the squarish edges of the finger get all cut into by the nail growing and it's all painful and pussy and horrible.

And my left ring finger being my probably second main fretting finger, it makes playing extremely painful for several days while the nail grows out a bit.

Does anyone else have this problem? Any tips for dealing with this? I can't tell you how annoying wincing in pain every second note you play is :P

in my opinion just keep it long enough so that it doesnt grow in. If a large part of the nail is cutting under the skin then you may have to get it removed. By removed i mean a simple procedure where they cut off the side of the nail and kill the nail cells so that portion of the nail wont grow anymore. I had chronic ingrown toenails on both feet and had the procedure done 5 times. The procedure isnt that bad.
It really depends on how bad the nail is when it comes to what to do.

It isn't terribly bad, unless I be an idiot, or slip with the clippers and cut it too short. But the nail has to be constantly long to avoid the edge of it eating into my finger, and it's quite annoying, especially when the rest of my more normally rounded fingers can be cut shorter and more managably.

This sounds more like a Web-MD question. If you're getting ingrown nails, go see the doctor. You don't want an infection.
