Instr. Video that has helped you the most

OK, two part question; here we go:

1) Name the one instructional video you think has helped you the most. Along with this, in four words or less, name the area the video helped you in (slap, finger excercises, theory, grooving, etc.) Don't think about it too much. Just put down whatever comes to mind first.

2) Name the one player you wish would put a video out, or at least a book. Again, just put down whoever comes to mind first.

My answers:

1) John Pattitucci's Electric Bass: Complete."

2) Alex Webster.

It's so hard to say what is the most important instructional video to me, but if i have to pick one up. I'd like to say that is Victor Wooten - Super bass solo techniques.

For the 2nd answer: i'll say Alex Webster too

1- This one became the absolute bible for me when I found it in 1991. It's focused on slapping and tapping, but I can't relate to just those two techniques. It is simply THE video that made me want to practice hard and seriously.

2- Geddy Lee.

Billy Sheehan's first video. I can't remember what it's called—Bass Secrets? Anyway, contrary to what most people would expect, MOST of that video really focused on the mechanics of bass-playing, not his flashier techniques. Lots of priceless-but-simple stuff like how best to position the bass, hand positions, common mistakes to avoid, etc.

I don't know of anyone who HASN'T put out a video... I mean, Jeez, if Fieldy's got one, then my mother-in-law deserves one. I do wish Myung would do a BETTER one... does that count?

I know my #1 doesn't really count as an instructional video in the lesson sense, but Anthony Jackson on Grover Washington Jr.'s 1981 Live DVD is a lesson in deep groove in itself.

The one person I'm really wishing who'd do a lesson DVD, on the other hand, has to be Colin Edwin of Porcupine Tree.

So far, Tony Saunder's playing with a band instructions really enforced my knowledge on the swing and feel of the bass depending on the style. But there are still so many things to look at.

1) Todd Johnson's video on the floating thumb technique. Far, far and away the most influential, on me, video I've ever watched. In the space of 2 weeks after doing what he says to do in it, there was an almost 9% reduction in the mud of my playing. Here a couple months out there's been another 4% reduction for a total of 13% less mud in my playing. That puts me down to 85% total mud at this point. 25 years of practice only brought the mud down 2% from 100% to 98% until running across his video - so an improvement like that is absolutely astounding.

2) Andy West - in particular, I'd like detail on his picking technique for all those Dixie Dregs songs.

1. Carol Kaye's video instruction (sorry, don't recall the exact title). It's great because it teaches MUSIC, and how to play it on electric bass. MOST videos I've seen are putrid because the focus is on the electric bass part, not the music.

2. Darryl Jones because every interview I've ever read has inspired me and challenged me to work at being a better player and musician.
