You know just recently finding out that he plays with two finger is like finding out there's no Santa Claus.

When people asked why I use three fingers (sometimes four) I always pointed to the Run to the Hills video as my inspiration when I was a kid.

See 2:53 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5Snehl2bAk it sure looks like three fingers. You can see it in other places.

But then he says two himself see 1:57 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajD1duxKSuE

I've been lying all these many years. lol

Oh well, even if I did lie, it did give me the idea to start using fingers 3 and 4. I do like using the three, it's easier (for me) on triplets.

I guess his 3 and 4 just go along for the ride.

Same here. Not condoning it or anything. In grade school, before I knew there was bass, I used to rap my 3 fingers on my desk for entertainment. When I picked up a bass, and put on iron maiden, it just came naturally without even having to practice it. That was nice. I play more of a blues rock now and still use 3 fingers from time to time when emphasizing certain notes to make them fatter. Haven't galloped in a very long time.

Slow the tempo way down (maybe half) and use a metronome to keep strict time. Gradually increase the speed, maybe in jumps of 5 or 10 bpm until you start dropping notes. Repeat the next day. Sounds boring, but it really works.

i either use 3 finger rolls or single finger like a pick. i dont know any maiden (blasphemy.. i know), but thats what i do when the situation arises. very rarely do i reach for a pick because something is too fast, unless its punk stuff, which almost NEEDS to be picked.

i constantly play air bass as a sort of "finger aerobics". i catch myself practicing my 3 finger rolls all the time.

also do a TON of drumming on things.. in good time.. both feet in a great double kick fashion.. but when i sit behind a kit, i cant play to save my life

Amen. There's an old adage in the computer software industry that works well for learning music, too:

Make it work. Make it work right. Make it work fast. In that order.

Don't forget; the fingers can stroke up as well as down.
Strive for an even attack, an even envelope-go slowly at first.
Then play it the way YOU want to play it.
It will always be right on.

Peace
