It's all in the attack...

Hello. I play without pedals and have been experimenting with different timbres and attacks ever since. Everything from impersonating a delay effect through controlling volume dynamic fluctuations to using different picks to plucking the string in different places in different ways. I just joined a band recently and have thus far been figuring out what types of picks to play for certain songs. I play a metal pick for one, a hard plastic pick for another, and I go for that Black Sabbath plucking at the fret board approach for another.

Here's my question. How many different ways have y'all approached getting versatile sounds out of the bass without all the hooplah of fancy pedals and effects? I'm curious what all can be done to get new sounds simply by playing differently.

Thanks.
Jeff
