My first teacher said I should sing tenor. Ten or twenty miles away. I was singing alto. Altogether too much. He couldn't baritone I made.

I can sing ok when I am playing the bass ok, but I can't do either together as well as I can do either separately. Now that I'm singing backup in 2 bands and playing, though, I'm getting quite a bit better.

Mark King/Level 42
Sting
Check 'em out. Youtube or otherwise. These two guys can keep you on your toes on the singing/bass playing duality, and most people could probably agree the've mastered the art (even if they don't like 'em).
Good luck with it.
