Check out Esperanza Spalding if you haven't heard her. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LC21nP8yFX0. Mind blowing. I can't sing and play at the same time to save my life.

I can't sing when I'm not playing. Or when I am. I can't sing period. Or exclamation point!

My first teacher said I should sing tenor. Ten or twenty miles away. I was singing alto. Altogether too much. He couldn't baritone I made.

I can sing pretty well, and I can play bass pretty well. I can sing ok when I am playing the bass ok, but I can't do either together as well as I can do either separately. Now that I'm singing backup in 2 bands and playing, though, I'm getting quite a bit better.

My main teachers:
Mark King/Level 42
Sting

Check 'em out. Youtube or otherwise. These two guys can keep you on your toes on the singing/bass playing duality, and most people could probably agree the've mastered the art (even if they don't like 'em).

Good luck with it.
