I just saw the Yellowjackets for the first time and had my noodle thouroughly cooked by the incomparable Jimmy Haslip. Had been a fan for 15 years, but WOW seeing him live is a phenomenon. There are so few guys outh there who can hold down a groove like that, play so melodically, and sear your eyebrows with 16th note solo fury.

Of course, the fretting hand technique is very unconventional b.c. he plays upside down, eliminating all our cool descending raking tricks. However, I was perplexed by the speed and dexterity he showed with "just" two plucking fingers. As much as I love Matthew Garrison and others for advancing the possibilities of additional plucking fingers, I found myself at the show wondering why anyone would ever want to play faster than this cat!

If you haven't checked out their live DVD, 25, you're totally missing out.

+10 Jimmy is an amazing musician and real nice guy if you get a chance to meet him. I've been lucky living in L.A. I've been able to hear Jimmy at many types of gigs over the last 25 years. He is one of those that truly loves to play and you can see it and hear it.

Fabulous!

JH is the smoothest monster, he always seems to have the best ideas for what/who ever he's playing. Can't say enough about him, one of my favorites. I don't have that DVD, but it's on the 'must-buy' list now, thanks!

That's cool Chicago. I have their double-disc (CD & DVD) 25 production. It is well worth the price. (though admittedly the video quality isn't great) (speaking of bass-player DVDs, I recently watched the Sting DVD that was recorded.... on 9/11/01... a cool disc with Christian Mcbride)
