Question John Entwistle suggestions

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok guys, I am looking to pursue a bottom up study of Entwistle's playing style. Entwistle 101 and beyond.

To clarify, I am by no means a complete Who neophyte, however I am by no measure an expert.

Do you guys have any suggested songs in particular to study as well as what order to tackle them to ease me into the world of 'The Ox'?

Thanks,

Lefty

Good songs to know:

The Real Me
Won't Get Fooled Again
pretty much the entirety of Tommy
I Can't Explain
Heaven and Hell
Boris the Spider

Most of all, though, I'd suggest buying Live At Leeds and listening to his bass parts (not hard to do since they're at the front of the mix), since their live sound really brings out his style.

Ya, live bootlegs are where Entwistle really shines. His studio stuff was great, but his live stuff is closer to what he envisioned his sound to be.

For individual tracks, I'd add "Bargain" from Who's Next, and of course "My Generation." I also think it's useful to hear what a great groove player the Ox was, as on Quadrophenia's "5:15," "Slip Kid" from Who By Numbers, and even the simple octave pattern in "Who Are You," which really makes the track move. And the list goes on...

But yeah, Live at Leeds and other live material from that era are the key. This includes the Woodstock performance, the Isle of Wight show, and others.

You should also get the DVD of The Kids Are Alright, which includes great live versions of "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "Baba O'Reilly" from 1978. For these tracks, you get the feed from the "Ox Cam," which is focused solely on Entwistle and isolates the bass track in the audio. Very sweet.
