Just learning to slap and have a problem

Sign in to disble this ad
I would class myself as an intermediate (and still developing) fingerstyle player but I have not attempted slap before. However I am trying to learn now and have bought the Ed Friedland DVD, which appears to be really good. I have a problem with the most basic technique, ie the slap. When I thumb the E or A string, they ring clear, but when I thumb the D or G string I tend to catch the other strings with the fleshy part of my palm where my thumb is attached, causing them to vibrate too. I can't see from the DVD how to avoid this. I have tried arching my wrist more, which allieviates the problem but makes popping more difficult. Someone help me out please, I've spent a week on this and I'm going slowly mad!

Oh yeah, I did a search but didn't find anything. ANY advice greatfully recieved.

the more paralel your thumb is to the strings the more accurate you should be. if your string spacing is narrow it will make it a bit more difficult. practice long enough and it shouldn't be much of an issue.

Some guys who use slap ubiquitously raise their bass up and approach it from a sort of underhanded position with their thumb. Here's Mark King, as an example.

The underhand approach is certainly not the only legitimate way to play, but I felt myself drawn that way pretty early in my development as a slap player and never changed back. I do feel as if that angle allows me better access to all of the strings without the rest of my hand getting in the way. Here is a clip that illustrates my approach.

The downside, I think, is that one cannot switch from fingerstyle to thumb technique as quickly this way. I actually feel myself shifting the position of the bass to the right when I make the change. On the other hand, Wooten, who plays fairly overhanded, can move from thumb to finger very rapidly. Some of this, no doubt, depends upon the weight distribution of your bass and your body.

That's my input. I'm sure you will find your own preference with time. Best luck.

The easiest way for me is to thumb through the string as opposed to bouncing off of it. This parallels how you play in fingerstyle (you would bounce your finger off the string). It gives a lot more control once you get used to it. Then if you really want to get crazy you can start to double thumb.

Aaarrrggghhh, this is driving me to distraction. I think it's a combination of my bloody great hammer thumbs and the narrow spacing of my Corvette 5. There's nothing for it, I'm off to the workshop to file my thumbs down!!!

Try to slap with the side of the thumb knuckle, and do it on the last fret, that should help you some.

Also, you don't need to whack it. Try to hit the string with the hard part of your thumb, near the joint, so you don't have to strike too hard. That might improve your accuracy. Another excellent slap resource is "The Slap Bass Program" by Alexis Sklarevski, highly recommended.
