What does it mean to 'lock with the drums' and 'staying in the pocket'. And can you please be specific!

The idea of 'pocket' comes up on here at least once a month, always with the same result. No one agrees. People know what it means for themselves, that's all it will ever be. It's like defining what is 'beautiful', or what it feels like to be in love. You know it when it happens. That's is all.
Also, I'd suspect most of the people that read but did not reply to this thread did so because the heading has nothing to do with the content... |

Some people will say that pocket is identical to 'locking with the drummer' and indeed that is a major component IMO. But I could sequence some MIDI drum 'n bass lines that were inherently 'locked' but to me that wouldn't have any 'pocket' at all. |

Like you said before - you'll know it when you hear it. "Being in the pocket" seems like fairly standard terminology not just with music, but anything - groove, pocket, zone - whatever you want to call it, it applies to sports, video games, even walking! |

Agreed, although I've never used the term 'pocket' for anything other than music and I kinda think there are some specific connotations to 'pocket' that are music related, it's similar to 'the zone'.

It's hard to verbalize.
I guess I would say that being in the pocket is playing what the groove, and by extension, the song require. Nothing more, and nothing less.
My personal favorite example of "Pocket" is "In Concert: The Best Of Jimmy Cliff [Live]" He has some monster players, and everything is very laid back, and well, perfect. It's a great example of "Just because you are capable of doing something doesn't mean you should". I like to listen to that CD on my way to a gig.
