Just nod your head and pretend to know what it means?

What does it mean to 'lock with the drums' and 'staying in the pocket'. And can you please be specific!

You seem to be someone who knows the answer as opposed to everyone else who read and didn't reply. Maybe you shoudl've posted a link to the thread or stated the answer.

OK then, but remember, this will be the one and only time that I will be your personal "search function servant".

How do I learn to play "in the pocket"?

The idea of 'pocket' comes up on here at least once a month, always with the same result. No one agrees. People know what it means for themselves, that's all it will ever be. It's like defining what is 'beautiful', or what it feels like to be in love. You know it when it happens. That's is all.

Also, I'd suspect most of the people that read but did not reply to this thread did so because the heading has nothing to do with the content...

Your profile doesn't say where you're from - is english your first language? I think these terms are fairly intuitive, and if not there is a lot of reading around here on the subject.

I don't know if I think the idea 'pocket' is entirely intuitive personally, but like I said everyone has a different definition.

Some people will say that pocket is identical to 'locking with the drummer' and indeed that is a major component IMO. But I could sequence some MIDI drum 'n bass lines that were inherently 'locked' but to me that wouldn't have any 'pocket' at all.

I agree entirely, but that's why I said it was intuitive. Like you said before - you'll know it when you hear it. "Being in the pocket" seems like fairly standard terminology not just with music, but anything - groove, pocket, zone - whatever you want to call it, it applies to sports, video games, even walking!

Ahh, I see where you are going. Agreed, although I've never used the term 'pocket' for anything other than music and I kinda think there are some specific connotations to 'pocket' that are music related, it's similar to 'the zone'.

It's when it sounds like the kick drum is plucking your strings and you're just fretting with your left hand.

Shouldn't he, who 'is to man, as wolf is to dog', be telling us what it means? And not just 'in the pocket', but everything.

Being in the pocket = being so into the groove that you don't even gotta think about it your fingers land each note perfect and goovetastic and you enter a state of mind where playing becomes 'easy' and natural, atleas thats how i'd describe it to me.

I usually ask a drummer what he defines as the pocket, and try to stick with that. Works most of the time, especially with deciding whether to hang around after he asks me what that is

Pocket... Hmmmm...

It's hard to verbalize.

I guess I would say that being in the pocket is playing what the groove, and by extension, the song require. Nothing more, and nothing less.

My personal favorite example of "Pocket" is "In Concert: The Best Of Jimmy Cliff [Live]" He has some monster players, and everything is very laid back, and well, perfect. It's a great example of "Just because you are capable of doing something doesn't mean you should". I like to listen to that CD on my way to a gig. It's everything I want to be
