Keeping Fingers on Frets

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I was playing the ActiveBass.com Melodic Metal exercise (This one: ActiveBass.com - with bass guitar lessons bass tab mp3 music scales gear and other goodies...), and while I was going through the first exercise, I wondered if I should keep my fingers on frets 7 and 8 to really stretch out my fingers.
Is that part of good technique? Keeping fingers on frets which you use several times in a row? I'm not 100% sure how to describe what I'm asking, and that's the best description I can come up with.

Do you mean keep them fretted while working around them? Not lifting off?

I believe so. Like, if I were, in the exercise, to press down on the fifth fret on the G string, am I supposed to, for good technique, keep my fingers pressed on the 8th and 7th frets because I will play the 8th, lift off, play the 7th, press it back down, hit the 7th fret on the G string, and keep my fingers pressed down on the 8th and 7th frets?

Yes, I see what your saying, what else is nice is keeping that 5th on the G down and sustaining it underneath the 7/8th fret movement on the D, same for the 7th on the G for as long as you can sustain them. For sure it is good for finger independence, stretching and applying the least amount of pressure to keep the flow (which isn't that much, no need to grip down). I think of that as more sustained choral way of playing, practice getting the least amount of pressure down to play it like that is a key.

Thank you. While it's easy just pressing my finger down on one fret and then lifting off and pressing on another fret, this skill might come in handy. I'll throw that in to my practice.
