Knocking?

Sign in to disble this ad
Michael Manring uses this technique in the song "Diagonal Head Trauma"

He "knocks" on his bass, whether it be with his fingers or palms, etc, and gets a drum-like percussive sound.

My question: How does he get it to be so loud? In the video I saw, all of the knocking was as loud as the notes he was playing, but when I try it, it doesnt work out nearly as well. Does it have to do with the body mass of the Hyperbass? Because thats the only reason I can think of why this shouldnt be working for me.

I've heard that he uses small ceramic acoustic p/ups that are mountable on the surface of the bass. I'm not certain if this is how he achieve's that effect, But it makes sense.

Defininitely compression. Manring has professional engineering for his live performances, and the exacting amounts of compression they apply would account for much of what the Original Poster described
