to learn all the funky frills?

Is there a good way to learn these frills? At soul/RnB/funk gigs the bass play seems to break off from the main riff to play some trick or other. They trade solid groove for a trick but only once so its hard to figure out what it was.

Yes I understand that: "it all comes from scales" but sometimes the trick is a simple 3 note chromatic run, or the fact that you play the right 2 notes of a scale, 2 octaves up.

It's all blues riffs and chromatic approaches to chord tones. The rhythm and feel are the hard thing to "get".
