Learning to play lefty

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all. I've been playing bass for the past year or so and I'd say I do pretty good as a righty. But I've come to a dilemma. I absolutely love playing Beatles songs, but sometimes it doesn't have that same feel when I play it right handed. I've tried playing lefty a few times on a non-Höfner bass I own, with little success. I was thinking about re-stringing my Höfner as a lefty and keep my other bass a righty. I think it would be easier since the shape is symmetrical.
So pretty much, anyone have any tips for learning how to play left handed?
Thank you

I wouldn't do it. The bass is a tool. Learn how you do it best and progress in that direction. If you get really bored and you're 100% confident in your right-handed playing, go for it.

Just my $0.02.

It seems that you don't have a real reason to want to switch. The basslines don't feel right when you play righty, and yet you cannot play lefty. It seems to me that you just need to work on your technique and feel.

Also, lefty basses are rarer and more expensive. That's not a niche you want to put yourself in unnecessarily.

However, if you absolutely must do it, do it. Michael Angelo Batio is pretty proficient at switching: YouTube - Michael Angelo Batio Double-Guitar Solo

The only reason I could see is if you plan to start a super-authentic Beatles tribute group.

Thanks guys for the input. I'm going to stick with playing righty for now, perhaps until I find a cheap lefty bass I can knock around with. When I said the bass lines 'didn't feel right' I meant it more in a sense that it didn't feel "authentic" (I'm the kind of guy that likes things by the book, true to the original, etc). I just have to stop being such a perfectionist .

I highly doubt that the handedness has any impact on playing. If Paul was right handed and played a righty bass, he would have played exactly the same, note for note.

If you want to play it perfectly, practice is your only answer
