Is learning to rake necessary to "take it to the next level"?
Being an RHCP kinda guy, I've adopted a very Flea-like technique over the years, raised forearm and strict alternation (although I've adapted to a movable anchor). But the thing is, for a lot of very advanced playing such as solos I've been learning, I either can't go fast enough, stumble over myself for going to fast, or get fatigued. I've noticed that nearly all the pros rake. So should I?
This Thread had over 60 posts. Might help.
IMO anything goes But I am no Purist by any means.
Who cares about "the next level"? Learn it anyway. Never disregard a new technique. Go for it.
