Left finger injury, right-hand excercises?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey there,

I have an injury on my left index finger due to martial arts training and can't play bass right now Are there any right-hand-only (I'm BEGGING you to quit the masturbating jokes ) excercises I could practice until my hand is healthy again? I just can't sit at home, looking at my bass and not be able to touch or play it (is this what a [bad] marriage feels like?)

I'm right-handed, so left hand is my "gripping" (what's it called properly in english?) and right hand is my picking hand.

Thank you very much in advance!

There's a lot you can do. You could revise your plucking technique and try new styles - floating thumb or moveable anchor, or whatever you are not doing.

You could also practice dynamics, string skipping, or practice playing with your thumb, or 3 finger techniques.

Or just train rythmic patterns with a metronome.

It's called the "fretting" hand, by the way.

If the rest of your left hand is still usable and not covered by bandages and splints, you can still play but you would be working on different fingering than if you were able to use your index finger.
I narfed my left index finger using my router (woodworking)- the tip was damaged and bandaged but the rest of my hand was OK. I found that it actually helped my left hand technique because I was forced to play differently. As soon as it wasn't too painful, I was using my left index finger again, with the bandage.

Absolutely -

String skipping exercise

Play sixteenth notes and work on accenting each of the 4 parts - "1" "e" "and" "a" individually. You control where the accent falls.

If you play with two fingers you can work on adding other fingers. You can work on slapping techniques, etc...

You can still work on left hand stuff. Use one finger and play up and down the neck using just this one finger. You'll get to know your neck like never before...

I went to music school with a girl who was studying classical piano. She injured her right hand somehow and had only the use of her left hand for a while. Well she worked it and worked it and when she finally got use of both of her hands again, her left hand (which is notoriously weak for a right-handed pianist) was much stronger than it had ever been and her playing improved because of it.

search the internet for "bass guitar right hand exercises". you'll come up with sites like these:
