Left (fretting) hand thumb on 6-string

I have searched plenty but couldn't find any threads covering my question. I hva since this summer playd my Gecko 6 as my main bass. I have started to get som pain in my left hand. After som reserach I have found that to reach the E and B string I kind of pivot my thumb so it is paralell to the neck, and I think this might be the cause. I have tried to keep my thumb paralell to the frets, but I can't seem to reach the top two strings well unless i straighten my fingers an lay them across all strings below. How do you guys cope with this? Where do you plac I have fairly large hands, so this should not be the problem. On my 4-string there is no problem at all.
What I would like to know is how much of your thumb is in contact with the neck? Only the part under the nail right? Do you move the thumb placement according to which string you fret? Or if stationary, where do you put it?
