| Make sure your thumb is perpendicular to the neck. For me, I've found it easiest to have the very tip of my thumb just barely touching the center of the neck, so my thumb is a little closer to the C string than the B side. That seems to give me a good place to stretch from. I've also found it better to have my hand sort of cupped and my fingers stretched out and bent sort of like claws.
