Left Hand Technique Question

Here is a video of me playing a song so I can see my technique.

Hey there fellow TBers, I have a question for you. I have been trying to better my technique over the years and the area that I'm having issues with is with left hand technique. I'd like to be able to have my left hand perpendicular to the neck. Oftentimes, my left hand is angled to the neck. Below is a picture of Steve Harris displaying the technique.

And here is a video of a bass player for Liz Phair that is playing with the technique I'm trying to work on. (He comes in after 30 secs)

Now I had a teacher show me this technique years ago, but the lesson is no longer fresh in my head. I remember him saying curl your fingers and relax your left shoulder. And that should help with aligning your body to play this way, or something like that. So, do you have any tips for this?

Much appreciated, Tom
