Left over fingers. What to do?

When playing fingerstyle, what do you do with your fourth and pinky fingers?

The reason I'm asking is because I usually tuck them under or around the E string. I've seen players kind of leave them "out" to the side. Whats the proper thing to do with those fingers?

i'd say the only bad technique is one that limits your potential. if tucking your "left over" fingers behind the E-string still allows you to do everything that you'd be able to otherwise, then more power to you.

I use any fingers not engaged in plucking a string to assist with muting.

I think I'm going to try "floating" my leftovers above the strings. Right now I'm injured! I think that it was from a combination of bowling, lifting weights, and practicing too long one night (6 hours without a break). I haven't been able to practice in about a week and a half!
