when i'm moving just a little along the fret board and reaching with a different finger, should i move my thumb to get a better angle and more pressure, from directly behind the first finger i pressed with to directly behind the second finger i press with? e.g. when moving from third fret pressed with middle finger to second fret pressed with index finger, should i move my thumb the wole way up or try to just reach? It's kinda hard to see what's happening behind the fret board in videos or watching someone play.

My thumb tends to rest on the back of the neck kind of between my 2nd and 3rd finger (middle and ring). But it moves about as well. It just depends on what works for you. Just make sure it gives you a good anchor to squeeze against.

If i have smaller weaker hands than my tutor/mate am i more likely to need to move my thumb more?

trying to learn from someone with monster-alien-bass-hands has it's draw-backs when i'm a mere-mortal verging on slightly-built nancy boy.

LOL YYYYY y of all the Ys to miss it had to be that one.
Answer... same as the many LOL.

If the accident your talking about was mine, as the link was to my page, i broke my neck and lost the use of my right side and had nerve damage to both hands. its the nerve damage that is the hard part because with out correct stimulis a muscle will not respond.

As for you:
These things are case specific and the first question to be answered is;
what's the cause, not the symptom?

It may be that playing shows this problem up.
If you were never to play bass would this have shown itself in another thing in the same way?
Check this link out its great reading and the Doc. is a orld leader in the field of hand surgery and problems

Read all the pages, it is hard to see them, but they are underneath each page in red, enjoy
