The Lemon Song...

This song has kicked my @$$ so far, and I'm only 24 bars into the solo now, so I guess you could say I've really only started the song! I've been taking my time with it and actually studying it as well as refreshing my memory on 12 bar blues / blues scales.

It has exposed so many holes in my technique that really surprised me, for example I had trouble including open strings. It felt weird the first few times mostly because I had difficulty holding the open string notes for the right length. From what I've read that's a technique that Jamerson etc used a lot of too, it gives the groove a nice vibe.

My fretting hand movements have become a lot more precise as there are a lot of nifty runs every few bars that I've had to master. I've almost tied my fingers in knots a few times - even when I've played along with a metronome at a slower tempo.

And while the time signature never changes I've definitely improved my ability to hold a winding groove that runs throughout the solo (or as far as I've gotten anyhow!).

Right now I think this is just the best feckin' song ever. I'm determined to work my way through as many other Led Zeppelin songs I can find. And my appreciation for JPJ's skills has increased exponentially.

Thanks MotownBass I'll definitely give it a listen and have a crack at playing it.

The Rover,,,,that's a funky one. All the "b" sections just kill.

The Lemon song is a tricky one. I'm not a zeppelin fan, and i play mostly technical death metal and the like, but this song really surprised me when a friend asked me to help him out with it. he was just starting bass, and i advised him to find something a bit easier...

When I learned the lemon song I had allot harder time getting in all the notes in on the double time parts than getting the funk down...

The real challenge to this song, for me anyway, is not to rush. The tempo is actually pretty slow and Bonzo lays back on the beat so it makes it really easy to get too far out in front, especially on those 16th note figures. In fact in a couple of places (on the studio version anyway), you actually hear JPJ just on the edge of getting too far out front himself, and pulling himself back into the pocket. Great exercise though. Then of course when they kick into the "rave-up" section you can just pretty much go nuts and not worry about that so much.

The 16th note runs in "Immigrant Song" will kick your rear too, if that's what you're looking for.

I'm in a Led Zeppelin Tribute. One of the reasons I like The Lemon Song is that I don't play it the same way every gig. There were many Zeppelin songs that JPJ didn't play the same everytime. Zeppelin was one of the first "jambands".

The hard part was getting my keyboard and mandolin chops going. I'm saving to get
some bass pedals.

This song is Bass Playing one of my all time favorites - JPJ is killing on this and many others - still think he is underrated as famous Bass Players go - huge part of the Zeppelin Sound.

Does anyone else feel like their fretting fingers are gonna either fall off or tie themselves in knots trying to get thru 'The Girl I Love She Got Long Black Wavy Hair'?
