I hope I was looking in the right places when I failed to find anything on the forums to answer my question. At any rate, most of what I find is a little more advanced than what I need to know. A few days ago my bass just flat out quit producing sound. I have passive pickups, while I have a few different cables that I went through to make sure it wasn't the cable I was using causing the trouble. I then used another guy's amp and got the same result (no sound). Being completely in the dark on where to go from there, I went to the local music store where they first said it might need resoldered, or perhaps something was wrong with the wiring/circuitry. At any rate, over the next 5 minutes I was asked several questions I could not answer and was told a few things I knew nothing about. First, the guy says "oh, your bass was cold soldered, but that's not the problem" (I have a fender jazz with s-1 switching, by the way). He next said, "this is weird, there's no ground wire here," before opening up one of their display models and seeing this was correct for the s-1 jazz. Finally, he just shaved a bit off of the end of a wire and told me "the problem is there was no ground", which I thought was supposed to be normal. Anyway, I guess what I'm hoping to get is some basic info on bass guitar electronics. I realize this is common info for most of you here, so I hope somebody can, at least, point me to a website/book that would help. I've been playing for a while now and would like to know more about my bass than how to clean and put on strings!! (believe it or not, I started out in engineering before switching to pharmacy school) Thanks in advance for any help. |
