Little slap dilemma

Sign in to disble this ad
Alright I'm just starting to learn slap. I have a 5 string bass. The dilemma is for some reason it is extremely hard for me to thump the g d a strings like I always end up hitting a wrong string and even if the string is muted ( and its harder for me to mute 3+ strings, maybe just playing more and getting my hand to turn rubber will help? ) I get unwanted noises.. So usually I try to just pop those strings but sometimes its like t p t t p p p p t. and it sounds bad because of the excesse of highs. So anyone know any excercises or suggestion help make it easier for me to hit those strings?

Practice slapping the D and G strings?

Seems like you have the basics, now you just need to practice more.

Try slapping scales, do that until all the notes sounds even.

Timbo,

Minimize the range of motion of your slapping hand.

The smaller the range of motion, the less likely you'll be "off target" when attempting to strike a particular string.

When I started slapping, I used a lot of motion thinking that I had to hammer down on the string like a modern-day John Henry!

Hitting lighter, with less motion, has helped my consistency and accuracy.

Good luck.
