Live Version of Studio Cut, Light My Fire HELP!

Sign in to disble this ad
The singer wants to do the studio version of Light My Fire (Doors) live. I'm having a problem finding a decent pattern for the repeated bass line during the keyboard and guitar solos.

It's easy enough doing the riff the more common way (a half-step up from the studio cut). But it doesn't make sense for me to tune down a half-step for one song.

When I try to follow the bassline with the song, I've not found an easy enough pattern. My fingers contort and I get confused.

I believe the most common version of the riff is A-C-E-B-D-F# (which is 1/2 step up from the studio cut).

Any suggestions on which position to play the riff a half-step lower than the above?

Sorry if this sounds elementary, I've not been playing bass all that long.

Thanks!

The one-finger-per-fret technique is your friend here. The notes are Ab - Cb - Eb - Bb - Db - F, and I'd play them like this:

1. Ab on the E string, 4th fret, with index.

2. Cb on the E string, 7th fret, with pinky. Don't shift position here. Keep your hand in place and stretch it so the pinky can reach the 7th fret.

3. Eb on the A string, 6th fret, with ring finger.

4. Bb on the E string, 6th fret, with ring finger.

5. Db on the A string, 4th fret, with index.

6. Shift position so your index is on the 5th fret and then play the F on the A string, 8th fret.

7. Shift position again so your index finger is on the 4th fret and then start all over again.

Hope this helps.

in addition: the single is in A minor. the stereo LP version is in A flat minor, apparently due to some studio tinkering. some later releases of the album have corrected the recording to A minor. A minor appears to be the proper key for this song as originally composed...maybe.
