Lying on the Floor

I've heard, way too many times, the story about Jameson, drunk, lying on his back, recording the bass line to "What's Going On".

Finally I thought, why not try it?

So, I drank an entire bottle of a Crozes-Hermitage, set my itunes to repeat "What's Going On" and laid down on my back.

Honestly... it worked! I had played this tune 100 times, and never could I get the feel right... finally, it clicked.

So, next time you try playing the tune, a ton of french wine and a hardwood floor may just do the trick.

Just saying.

I've read the part was prewritten in Jamerson's style by Dave Van dePitte and that it was just Jamerson sight reading (which makes sense as I've heard storys about someone holding sheet music above him which wouldn't be necessary for such a simple song otherwise); anyone know if it's true?

No no, the booze just makes you THINK you sound like Jameson. Next time you do it (for SCIENCE!!! of course), record yourself and play it back. No disrespect to your normal playing skills or anything, but I've got a shiny wooden nickle that says you'll sound like you're playing in jail: behind a few bars, looking for the right key. ;-)

Edit: for extra authenticity points, skip the squeezed French grapes and drink a bottle of Jameson next time!

lol, pretty funny

BUT

let's remember that the genius musicianship (and LIFE for that matter) of James Jamerson (i.e. the ONLY reason we talk about him here) was entirely WIPED OUT by substance abuse... so even in fun, we probably need to avoid glorifying or finding amusement in it

same goes for that other guy, Mr Pastorius

And it seems to me that it holds true with alot of genius artist ,no matter what their canvas may be. shame -but the normal human brain doesnt seem to work like the artistic brain, or does it and we supress it to conform to society.

I agree with the previous two posters. Much better ( and healthier), to try to emulate the more positive side of Jamerson's playing.
