Mark King- how does he do it?

Over at http://www.basslobster.com/site you can see Mark King do an awesome slap bass solo!

Im not used to playing like this at all, so im embarrassed to ask this but does he get percussive click sounds? Is it just with hammering his thump, and plucking the same string at once, or his he fret hand involved in producing these sound.

For instance are the fingers on his fret hand pushing hard on the strings or are they just barley touching tem like when you play harmonics?

The percussive pops are a mixture between muted pops/slaps and left hand slaps.
