Is it me or my equipment?

Is my technique just bad or is it the fact that I'm using a Squier P-Bass with a B150 Hartke that makes me sound horrible when I slap?

Probably a combination of both. Go to guitar center (or any music store) and play through different basses and amps to see if it's you or your equipment.

Good idea. Even a great bassist might not get a good tone out of some basses.
