Notes/Min

or

[note value] at [bpm]

"400 notes/min" sounds a lot more standard to me than "16th notes at 100 bpm"

I disagree completely.

If someone says "blah-blah notes/min" it sounds like they're trying to brag. You wouldn't use that kind of nomenclature to describe a song or a section of a song to another person either, it just sounds silly.

As far as actually measuring speed, I doubt many do that, or are concerned with it as far as having an actual number to quote.

Uh. Hasn't it always been in bpm? I prefer bpm too because it's an easy way to subdivide the beats...you can quickly multiply them and divide them.

Are we talking about how it's written, or how it's expressed in conversation? If I saw 120/min, I would say" 120 beats per minute", not 120 over a minute, or the letters B-P-M. In most cases, I would just say 120, and musicians would get it "let's try it at 120..etc". As far as the written convention, 120 bpm seems more natural than a slash.

One drummer likes to get the timings down on the songs he has to set the time to. He keeps a metronome attached to one of the stands.

So we always use BPM, but would never say that. How fast is this song? About 80. How about this one? 120.

"Notes per minutes" is only used by non-musicians. Some happen to own musical instruments.

Interesting responces

Honestly, I usually just set up a drum beat in Hammerhead and lock in with the kick. Or set my metronome to X and lock in with that. I need a metronome that can go faster tho lol

Just cut the time and half and play double time. And if you need faster than that.......
