metal technique for other genres?

Sign in to disble this ad
i've read pablomigraine's sticky about the fingerstyle technique used in metal (where the string actually strikes the fretboard) and have really enjoyed the attack and harmonic content it offers. My question is this... do others use this technique in other genres of music (besides Harris and Entwhistle)? is it common?

It's not an easy technique to use in most styles, but as a former metal player it naturally emerges on some tunes in a pop rock band I used to play.

Not the most useful thing, but sounds cool on some passages.
