Thunk.

Yeah, all these great players who say work with a metronome in magazines, plus all the pros on here who say work with a metronome, they're all just stupid idiots.

A metronome is not a crutch. You don't take a metronome out to gigs with you and play to it. It's a practice tool...not a gigging tool. If you work better using a drum machine, that's fine, just as long as you have a steady beat to work to. But hey, if you don't want to work with one, that's fine by me...that just makes less bass players I have to compete with for gigs.

I hope you don't take this the wrong way, because I'm not trying to offend, but I don't believe you. It's just not possible that a non-pro would have perfect timing without metronome work when every pro bassist works with a metronome regularly because they need it.

++ on the 2 & 4.

Also it's good to have a 'nome that has a different sound for the 1. When you have it clicking on every beat of 4/4 and you're practising your wildly improvised solos it's good to be able to check in on the one easily (until you don't need to!).

My teacher actually won't let me use the accented beats!! Definitely makes you better at keeping track and feeling the structure when you don't have anything leading you around.

YMMV
