Minor 3rd magic?

Sign in to disble this ad
Of course this is an oversimplification, but lately I've been thinking/feeling that minor 3rds are the magic interval on bass(could be applied to other instruments as well, I suppose). I am mostly talking about 'linear minor 3rds', not like a double stop. Though maybe part of it is when you do get that moment of overlap when playing a minor 3rd between 2 strings....

I'm a huge fan of the m3. A lot of my lines revolve around it.

Talk to me about double stop.

I'm not clear on what is involved in a double stop, i.e. "linear minor 3rds, not like a double stop"

Thanks.

A double stop is just a two note chord.

Technically a chord has to be 3 notes or more, so that's why we call it a double stop and not a chord.

Another term you may hear for a 2-note "chord" is a Diad - I think Double Stop is a modern name & Diad is the traditional term.

I think I like Diad better - I'm going to use that from now on

I am a fan of the diad also except it's dyad:
