I know what you're saying...I hate being a part of something that already has a predetermined label on it, it feels like a constriction from the get-go. This is my take...
Listen to some old Motown, Hip-Hop, and Reggae. 98% of all that music is 4/4 stuff and so a lot of rock/metal. I think the feel of the above three styles would add more of what you're looking for. And remember...if you really want to be funky...you have to listen to the "InFluEnces" that the funk masters listened to...but I think this will give you a feel. But above even all that, you have to play what you feel. You can play almost anything with a 4/4, thousands of options. Play what your ear/heart like....cheers

Yeah, I kinda agree with ^, I didn't want to say it, but try some different stuff and see if you like the feel of it, then see if your mates like the feel of it; if not then yes, you're in the wrong band. That's a last resort though, don't give up so easy...

yeah i have noticed that but these guys are like brothers to me.

so im hoping that i can just put my own twist on the music that we play by using scales and stuff instead of just playing 1 note over and over again depending on what key/note the guitarist is playing
