More Frets = Hurt Fret Arm

Sign in to disble this ad
Aight, so I tried not to post this, but I said what the heck, can't hurt.

My Squier P-Bass has 20 Medium Jumbo Frets.

My Spirit has 24 frets.

I'm trying to get used to the Spirit's reach. My left arm is definitely not enjoying it. I can play just about infinitely on the P-Bass and no problems, but not the Spirit.

Any tips on making the change faster? Can it be done? Basically all I've been doing is trying to find a position with my strap that's comfortable to play and comfortable to my arm. Yes, those are two different comforts to me haha.

Any advice appreciated.

Sounds like neck dive to me, which would have nothing to do with the frets.

At what fret is the strap button on your Spirit?

Yea, I've thought about moving the strap button. It's basically at the 20th or 21st fret. It's not bolt on, so basically right where the neck meets the body they put the strap button.

The Synapse has a strap button extension that helps it balance better. Don't know if it works on a Spirit, but I sold my Steiny copy for the exact same reason...and it's also why I don't like Explorers or T-Birds or V basses.

I might need to just buy it and make it work. Saw one for 30 bucks. I like the bass, but it's a pain to play. It ain't going nowhere, so I'm gonna make it work. Hopefully I find something that doesn't require me buying something else, but if it do oh well.

EDIT-Went ahead and relocated the strap button. If you stand the bass up on the floor facing you, and look to the left and right, there's wood right there. So I screwed into the wood on the left, which is the right side of the bass. I like the strap button there, and I think it's gonna work for me. Only downside is I did this by hand so I'm hitting some pretty tough wood, the button is flying all over the place without a strap on there haha.
