Watch the film "Standing in the Shadows of Motown". It will get you in the mood, then go and improvise!
Good luck!

Learn your major and minor scales in all 12 keys, get a chord chart, and improvise.

Try reading some on Carol Kaye's forum and work with the root, fifth and sixth. Also check out YouTube.

Buy a Motown Anthology piano/chord/vocal book. Following the basslines in the piano music to see what you hear when listening to Motown produced songs from the 60s through early 70s

I'd advise buying the book 'Standing in the Shadows of Motown' to really see what James did ; )

So true. It starts and ends with Jamerson. Even the other bass players who worked in this style (Kaye, Jemmott) are following in his footsteps.

For music of the 60's it comes down to Jamerson, McCartney and Dunn.
