Mute Slap

Anyone know how to do it?

It sounds real good. I heard it several times from Ryan Martinie in Dig and Death Blooms and i think FLea also did it in Tell Me Baby.

It's a little weird and a bit uncomfortable, but if I have it right, it goes as follows:

Put the edge of your right palm very close to the bridge like you would do if you were playing palm muted plucked notes. Now, keeping the edge of your palm anchored on your strings, only twist your wrist to slap. You'll be slapping over the pickups, but it's part of the sound. The notes will be very damp.

If this isn't what you're talking about, disregard this post.

Love,
TBB

I try to find videos on youtube and when ever they mute the left hand seems to spread out and you put you finger on all strings. I'm not sure about right hand though, maybe i should try what you suggest.

I really like the sound though, so i would try to do it even if it is really hard

Ok i actually found it now, i think you have to put palm flat on all four strings on the fretboard, not that sure though.

Kim Stone (The Rippingtons) does a really cool muted slap solo (Highroller) on the 'Live In L.A.' cd

Oh oh, you mean a thump. That is, when you hit a percussive note using only your left hand. Yes, you do use your left hand fingers--usually the last three (no index), and with the strength of the three fingers, you whack the strings and hold them on the strings so they don't ring.

I thought you mean palm muted slap, which wasn't correct.

i just found out that it is actually what people called "deadnote", I think it is when on your left hand you touch the string but did not press it. I'm not that sure though.

That's exactly what it is. Find the recording I mentioned above and you'll hear a very good example.
