I'm looking for some tips on muting strings when playing runs fingerstyle. Do you use the fleshy part of your palm on your picking hand?

I don't think I could palm mute while playing with my index and middle fingers; especially when playing a "run".

If you're having problems with open strings ringing while you're playing, check out the floating thumb technique. There's another floating thumb technique thread here.

Palm muting is more for getting the old Jamerson sound of dead strings or whenever you don't want notes to sustain very long. You can control sustain by rolling more of you palm onto the string.

For runs faster than you can play with your thumb then some players will use index finger and thumb to play notes. Kind of like a fingerpicking guitarist. If you have to play busy line with that sound I would say get a piece of foam and put it under your string back by the bridge. Check out Bob Babbit on Standing In Shadows of Motown movie and some others too that use foam to deaden strings for Old School thump.
