Muting high strings with fretting hand

Sign in to disble this ad
Right now, I'm trying to learn as best as possible from as many books and websites as possible, but there is one thing that occasionally gets to me.

Say I'm fretting a note on the E or A string with any finger but my index finger. Sometimes a higher string will ring out.
Is there something I've been missing somewhere?

Take a look at this technique. Apart from being a great muting technique, it also helps you to avoid physical problems by keeping the wrist straight.

This is a good technique, but it's more related to muting the lower strings.

OP, I don't really know what to suggest. I have difficulty with this when playing certain lines and i'd be interested to know a good technique.

Yeah, I was referring to left handed muting technique.

I've seen that video on here a couple of weeks ago, and it is quite a simpler technique compared to some of those fixed anchor techniques.

By using the "Floating Thumb" combined with L/H muting, you should have everything covered. What one hand cant mute, the other should be able to.

I generally have most of my fingers flat against all strings higher (in pitch) than the strings i'm playing. Its almost compulsory to mute strings like that on a 5+ string bass. The lower strings are muted by my thumb on my right hand.
