Muting open strings with the double-thumb technique

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been working on Classical Thump for a couple of weeks now, and while my right hand is doing well with learning the different plucking permutations, I am getting a substantial amount of sympathetic vibrations from open strings, to the point where the etude is sounding unmusical. Right now the only solution I have found is to fret notes on upper strings with the part of my finger closest to the palm of my hand, between the second and thrid knuckle. It is working for now, but I have a ways to go with it. Are there any other ways to mute strings using the double thumb technique?

Both. Classical Thump, along with exercises from Victor's video lessons and ones I have developed myself are currently what I am using to develop this technique.

Rest your fretting hand on the strings, and even if you are pressing something on a string, rest the finger on the rest of the strings. What I do is keep my fretting hand very loose and relaxed and only use minimal motion when fretting, hope it helps.
And mute the E string with your thumb if you hand is big enough.

I think, that for doublethumb grooves is better to start with more rythmical playing instead of Classical thump.

But if you want to learn CT - ok. I guess I know where could be the problem, but is it possible for you to record it? Itīs best to diagnose the problem perfectly.

Even when Victor is playing it it doesent sound good to me. There is just trouble with how is the etude written. But you can see, that Vic is muting with his thumb over the fretboard.
