muting problems

hello everyone i recently have been practicing muting and i am having a lot of difficulty with it. my finger get confused and i just end up muddying everything up please give me some help i been playing one year and i have a 5 string warwick corvette rockbass. thank you and take care

There are various types of muting, so it's hard to know exactly what you are asking.

Do you just want the strings other than the one you are playing to stop ringing? That's fairly straightforward if you use floating thumb.

+1. The floating thumb technique is particularly good when muting on a five or six string bass.

When fretting a note, let off on it without completely releasing it right away to give it a quick decay (effectively ending it and muting it). Muting with your plucking hand will just stop a note dead in its tracks.
