Hello,
I've been playing six string bass for a while now and for the time I could get by with just muting the strings I wasn't playing by just using the floating thumb technique. While this is technique is bulletproof and relatively easy, I don't like it because it feels strange.
The suggestion given to me was just to incorporate left hand muting into my fingerstyle playing to mute the strings. I have seen someone use left hand muting in person to play my own bass, but I still don't understand. For example, the person played an F on my C string ( fifth fret ) while keeping his thumb anchored on the low B string and was able to keep the other strings quiet. Is there something very fundamental that I'm not understanding?
When I watched this bass solo by Andrew Gouche (
YouTube - Andrew Gouche Bass Solo (Jazz on the Pond)), which is really good, how is playing those high notes without having the middle strings ring out like crazy?
