Muting the A string

I've been playing for about 6 months and just got told that it's best when playing G and D strings to keep the E string and A string muted with thumb and ring finger. I normally don't get any ring from my A string, so was wondering whether it's really necessary.

It is better to do it but you only need one finger. Rest the thumb on the A string and its side against the E string.

Check out this technique. It's great for muting and also helps you avoid getting carpel tunnel syndrome.

One day, you will have to play a line that, no matter how you swing it, will cause the A to ring if you don't mute it. You might not need it now, but investing time in good muting technique now will pay dividends in the future.
