Muting Strings

I have searched the whole Internet. I play with a pick. The songs I have been playing recently involve playing multiple strings at a time, like chords on guitar. I am a guitarist, too. I keep hitting the open strings. It is the worst when I play Always by Blink 182. The intro, I can mute D string with my pointer finger. But the verse I cant. You have to look at the song to see this. I can't palm mute, it slows me down too much, and I can't reach to mute with my fretting hand. What can I do?

The fingers that you are not fretting with, lay across all the strings, but do it with them kind of on an axis so they touch some, but not all... the strings they are not touching are the ones you are playing, the ones they are touching are the ones being muted... you could always lay them down across all the strings to mute the strings.

This isnt the greatest video example, but I am mainly fretting with the 1st and 4th finger, and using the 2 / 3 to mute strings... but this will give you a visual idea of what I'm talkin about:

Playing with a pick I either mute with my unused fingers or my thumb, for Always I play the verse on the D & G strings and mute the E & A strings with my thumb.
